When it comes to quality materials and protecting your hunting dogs, I haven’t found anything better than the Mendota Skid Plate.
Prior to getting this skid plate recommended to me by JT of Uplanders Warehouse, I used 3 other vests for my yellow lab. She is 10 now and when she was 3 years old, she gave me a pretty bad scare. We were hunting a tree line with a barbed wire fence. She went on point and it turned out to be a hen when it flushed. She bolted after it and with her aggressive nature, ignored the fact that she ran right into the fence, tripped her up a little bit and she returned to me.
As she approached me, I saw the blood flowing from the cut low on her chest with a stream of blood pouring from it. It looked really bad but luckily it was just that spot where that type of injury looks worse than it was. This was the one time I hunted early season and the vest I had at that time was a full body type and too warm that day for her to be wearing.
That was a spot I wasn’t familiar hunting before either. I can beat myself up for not being prepared and protecting but she turned out fine. After that, I knew I needed to find a different type of vest that she could wear during warmer weather and protect her chest and undercarriage.
Uplanders Warehouse was an advertiser on Upland Game Adventures. JT (the owner) carried great products on his online store and he became a valuable asset to me for recommending a lot of great products. So when he suggested the Mendota Skid Plate I felt his knowledge couldn’t steer me wrong. Not only does this skid plate still look brand new, I haven’t had to sew any of the straps and fabric on this skid plate. Which was a major issue with this most recent vest I had?
- It does come in 4 different sizes.
- Two layers of water resistant 1000 denier Cordura nylon
- Adjustable strap system made of rugged nylon webbing with quick release buckles
- slide adjusters and steel center ring to ensure the Mendota Skid Plate stays on while providing the best possible fit
